Tips for Travelling Diabetics

Being ill should not stop people from travelling and enjoying what life on the other side of the planet has to offer. One just has to follow certain guidelines to ensure the safest time abroad as possible.

Prior to one's trip, make sure that you visit your doctor and inform him about your trip. Get an A1c exam, a test to check one's blood glucose level, done before your trip and discuss this with your doctor. Your doctor should be able to recommend additional or any modification in your medication or advice on any vaccination that may help ensure you the best of health while travelling.

Pack your medication in your hand-carry bag so you can have it wherever you go. Constant reading of your glucose level is very important, so always keep your glucose metre with you in your hand-carry bag as well. This way, you can be assured that you have your medication with you all the time even if your luggage gets lost, just in case.

It is essential for diabetics to wear a bracelet that identifies them as one. So, acquire one as this will be helpful especially on emergency situations. You can ask the airline if you can have a special meal that follows your diet. Stay hydrated at all times especially on long trips. If you can help it, bring snacks and plan meals to help you stay within your nutritional goals as well. When dining out make sure that you order food that contains fruits and vegetables. Also, keep meat and food that are rich in carbohydrates, starch and sugar to minimum or none at all. If you are travelling with a company other than your family, it is important to inform them about your condition and the things that need to be done should there be an emergency.
